Ringworm in cats, dogs, animals and humans is not caused by a worm but by a skin fungus organism. It is the same fungus that causes athlete's feet that many people get on their feet.
It has a round red dry scaly appearance that damages the fur of the pet or hair in humans on that area of skin where it is located.
Ringworm is highly contagious so the skin fungus can be transmitted easily to each other from animal to human and visa versa. If you or the animal have direct contact with the fungus infection it can cause an infection to happen to you or your animals.
Treatments usually involve a vet or a doctor for treatments of anti-fungal shampoos on the pet, rinses or creams applied to the skin of the pet or the human. When you work with someone or a pet with ringworm you need to protect yourself from contamination by using cleanliness procedures. It is wise to use surgical gloves when working with a pet or human infected when treating their ringworm. It’s also wise to have the person use their own towels, soaps, etc to wash up using there own so as not to spread to others. The same when bathing or rinsing the pet use a clean towel and wash the towels, hands, etc right after to keep the germs from being spread to you and others in the home.
If you suspect that your pet has ringworm you need to take him to a veterinarian who will take tests to know for sure. The same with humans you will need to go to the doctor to check to make sure if you really are infected with ringworm. Some people are more prone to getting ringworm then others. Once treated for ringworm you usually don’t become infected again.
