Have you ever looked at your dog or cat with their heads down low and thought that they look so sad? Pets also suffer from grief over the loss or death of another member of the household. When my father died my mother's dog went into a depressed state at the loss of his owner. My mother's pet cat also died years before and her pet dog seemed to miss the other pet.
A friend of ours just had one of her 3 dogs die. The one dog seemed to go into a depressed state after that so she got another dog to replace the one that died. The other dog was over powering and he over powered the dog that was depressed furthur escalating the depression of the dog.
Pets also become depressed when their owners are gone for many hours a day. When we got our rescue dog from the city dog pound they made us sign a paper that we won't leave our dog alone more than 8 hours a day so I suspect that leaving the dog more than 8 hours they think is abuse to the dogs. Dogs need a lot of people contact.
New changes in the home environment from a move, new babies being born also effect the pets. I know so far 2 families who were ready to give away their pets a dog, a cat because of the pet being sad as the young family never had time for the pet since the birth of their new babies. I've done some research on that and have found that if you just spend 15 quality min a day with your pet at least one owner it will make the difference and you won't need to give away your pet.
If your pet's behaviour changes from the normal behaviour or their personality changes as well from their normal they maybe depressed. Has your pet lost his appetite, or his behaviour become destructive, lethargy, excessive grooming in cats are all signs of depression.
Our friend took her pet dog to the vet to check him out to see if he was ill to rule that out. I gave her some of our pet that died dog toys. My friend said that it made a marvelous difference in his life as he got one of the balls and ran around so happy. He started getting new life into him again. A few new toys made all the difference.
My husband and I got another dog from the city animal services recently after our pet dog's death and t new rescue dog had his head hanging low for days. He was a stray and he seemed so sad. After a couple of months of walking him, loving him and taking him to the parks he discovered squirrels. He started chasing them up the trees and it made such a positive difference in his life. He smiles now where he didn't before.
Just a change in the pets situation can make all the difference. If you can spend at least 15 quality min with your pet a day and try to find something in their lives that brings joy to your pet you maybe able to bring the pet out of their depression.
