Many probiotics carry amazing health benefits for dogs … but not all probiotics!
I wonder can I give my dog probiotics? Are human probiotics safe for dogs?
What are Probiotics?
Probiotics are live microorganisms that live in various parts of your dog’s body like the gastrointestinal tract, the oral cavity, vagina, nasal cavity, respiratory tract, the organs and on the skin. It literally means “life.” They are “good bacteria” that keeps the body in a good healthy balance.
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that live in the digestive tract. There are a variety of different species belonging to genera that include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus, and Enterococcus (often abbreviated by first initial only in names). Some species, such as Lactobacillus, live primarily in the small intestine, while others, such as Bifidobacteria, reside in the large intestine (colon).
Just like humans, the majority of a dog’s immune system resides in his gut. The gut is the largest immune organ in the body and contains approximately 70% of all immune cells. So, keeping your dog’s digestive system running optimally is essential to making sure that he stays healthy, active, and lives a full and healthy life.
